An Overview of Zmodo Home Security Cameras

Zmodo has been around for a little over a decade. They were founded in China and produce a variety of smart security cameras for both indoor and outdoor. They also offer basic home security essentials including sensors and secure cloud storage. We reviewed the home security company to see if it compares to popular home security companies today.

Zmodo: Our Recommended Pick for Home Surveillance Systems

With Zmodo, you’ll be able to create your own home surveillance system at an affordable price. For $4.99/mo., you’ll have a week’s worth of cloud storage, continuous video recording and more – all without a contract. They also offer up to 12 hours of cloud storage for free. They have a wide collection of cameras to help you pick the perfect one for your budget and security needs.

Price & Packages

  • Cameras start at $79
  • The Basic plan gives customers 12 hours of cloud storage for free

Zmodo offers affordable security cameras and cloud storage without spending a lot. They offer a wide range of cameras that start at $79 retail price and go up to $129 for their most innovative camera that doubles as a color-changing light. Cloud plans are also available with their Basic plan for 12 hours of footage free of charge. • Zmodo offers a variety of cameras
  • Not many smart home products available

We like that Zmodo offers a variety of indoor, outdoor and video doorbell cameras to choose from at a wide price range. Cameras have features including voice assistant compatibility, two-way audio and motion detection. They’re easy to control using the Zmodo mobile app, where you can also see live clips and get instant camera alerts. However, Zmodo doesn’t offer many smart home products. They only offer a Wi-Fi extender for your cameras and entryway sensors that send instant mobile alerts and connect to your cameras. Other top smart home products aren’t available.

  • DIY installation - no professional installation currently available

Zmodo cameras require a Wi-Fi connection and must be self-installed. Your cameras may require drilling and cables to set up and connect cameras for a whole-home camera system. Each camera includes a manual with step-by-step pictures and clear instructions. But at this time, Zmodo doesn’t offer professional installation.

Customer Service

2 out of 10

  • Google Play Rating: 3 out of 5
  • iTunes Rating: 2.4
  • Trustpilot Rating: Bad

Zmodo has an email, live chat and phone number to assist customers. But unfortunately, Zmodo doesn’t have the best reviews based on Trustpilot customer feedback with a rating of ‘Bad.’ Customers have a hard time getting the cameras to connect to Wi-Fi – even with a strong connection. Some also complained that it was nearly impossible to reach Zmodo customer service by phone or chat. Their app has a three out of five-star rating on Google Play. Customers argue that the app is slow and has a few bugs including randomly opening without permission. Apple customers also gave the company a 2.4 rating. Apple customers said their cameras would skip recording for full days and the need to forcefully close the app and reopen it for it to work.

Standout Features

10 out of 10

  • Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
  • Cameras have smart detection with instant mobile alerts

Zmodo has a few standout features that give you more control of your home’s surveillance and security. Many features are exciting, but common compared to popular security cameras. Some cameras work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for hands-free voice control of your live video feed. Many of their cameras have smart motion detection to always know who’s around your home with instant mobile alerts. The cameras also record a 10-second clip when your camera’s motion sensor is triggered. And your clips are automatically stored on Zmodo’s cloud storage service for at least 12 hours so you have plenty of time to review, share and save footage.

  • Zmodo offers a 1-Year Limited Warranty

Cameras and other Zmodo equipment come with a one-year limited warranty to cover any product or accessory defects. Keep in mind that the warranty doesn’t cover instances when service is interrupted or there’s an error. They also do not cover repairs or replacements if customers fail to follow set-up instructions.

Why We Recommend the 7-Day Plan

Zmodo’s 7-Day Plan is a good fit for its competitive price-point (you’ll typically find providers that offer video recording charge around $4.99/mo. for a single camera). With this plan, you’ll still get alerts to your phone whenever motion is detected by your camera, and you have up to 7 days to review and playback video. Honestly, in the event you notice something suspicious, you’ll likely alert the authorities immediately, and that’s why we think the 7-Day Plan offers enough time for you to store, review, edit, and share recordings. If, however, you would like to store your video for a longer period of time, we’d recommend going with the 30-Day Plan.

Zmodo Recap

Zmodo is great for an affordable smart surveillance system. No matter what camera you choose, you’ll have up to 12 hours of cloud storage for free. We find that Zmodo is good for a variety of cameras and prices to meet your needs.

Zmodo works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for hands-free control. Each camera has top features that are easy to control using the Zmodo app. However, the app has a few glitches according to customer reviews.

You’ll get a 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee, 1-year warranty and free lifetime support to meet your customer satisfaction. But be mindful that customer service doesn’t have the best reviews. On the bright side, Zmodo has affordable equipment and cloud storage plans. The lowest camera starts at $79 and cloud storage starting at $4.99/mo. without a contract.
