First Look At SimpliSafe’s Sleek New Smart Lock

SimpliSafe is a leader in the do-it-yourself (DIY) home security space. The company offers affordable, flexible home security systems featuring wireless technology that’s easy to install yourself. However, one of the company’s downsides is that it doesn’t offer as wide of an array of smart home accessories and automation appliances as some of its competitors. SimpliSafe’s new Smart Lock helps to change that.

SimpliSafe Smart Lock Features & Benefits

Like other smart locks, SimpliSafe’s offering promises 21st-century convenience for your front door. Instead of relying solely on a traditional key, the smart lock allows household members and visitors to unlock or lock the door via personalized PIN codes. The lock can also be operated with SimpliSafe’s keypad or key fobs (part of its home security equipment packages) or set up with autolocking features. With a SimpliSafe monitoring plan, you can also use a smartphone app to remotely lock and unlock the door on demand. And don’t worry – you can still use your original key if you need to.

Pros: It’s sleek & wallet-friendly

The basic functionality of the SimpliSafe Smart Lock isn’t breaking any new ground, but it does have a slim, sleek profile that’s available in three finishes, so it shouldn’t be an eyesore on the front door. At 0.9 inches thick, SimpliSafe claims it’s the thinnest on the market. (For comparison’s sake, the August Smart Lock, which is currently our top choice for smart locks, is about 1.6 inches thick.) Another differentiator: its starting price is $99, which runs about $100 less than similar devices.

Cons: It works best with a SimpliSafe security system and monitoring

As with the rest of SimpliSafe’s products and services, you aren’t technically required to pay a monthly monitoring fee in order to use the Smart Lock. However, its functionality is limited without it. Without paying for SimpliSafe’s $25 per month Interactive Monitoring Plan, you won’t be able to use the mobile app to lock or unlock it. If you ask us, that’s one of the most appealing reasons to have a smart lock.
