Looking for a more cost-effective Ring doorbell?

Look no further because Ring now has a $59.99 wired video doorbell. The new Ring Video Doorbell Wired looks a little different compared to its siblings, thanks to its slimmer profile.

While wiring up a doorbell may seem like a challenge for some, one of the benefits of a wired doorbell camera is that you won’t have to be concerned with changing out the batteries. Instead, wired doorbells are constantly supplied with power.

Here’s a closer look at some of the tech specs this device has to offer.

Ring Video Doorbell Wired - Tech Specs:

  • 1080p HD video
  • Two-way talk to hear and see visitors
  • Alerts to your phone, a compatible Amazon Alexa device, or a Ring Chime
  • Night vision
  • Constant power with no need for battery replacement
  • Control with the Ring app

Ring Doorbell Wired Installation

Ring explains how you can install your new doorbell camera:

  1. First, you’ll need to shut off power at your circuit breaker
  2. Take the jumper cable that comes with your doorbell and connect the ends to the terminals for your current doorbell chime
  3. At your existing doorbell, you’ll need to disconnect it and connect the wiring to the back of your new Ring doorbell
  4. Once that’s done, fix your Ring doorbell in place with the faceplate and turn your power back on
  5. To complete setup, use the Ring App

How Does the Ring Video Doorbell Wired Work?

Once you’ve installed the doorbell camera, you’re ready to test it out. In the Ring app, you’ll be able to see a live video feed when you’re ready. You’ll also be able to get activity alerts on your phone.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that if you want to hear an audio notification whenever someone’s at your door, you’ll need to purchase the Ring Chime or use a compatible Alexa device.

Additionally, the Ring Doorbell Wired features two-way talk, night vision, custom privacy settings, and advanced motion detection. You don’t have to purchase a Ring Protect subscription plan to use the doorbell, but a subscription will enable additional features like video saving and sharing, person only mode, and rich notifications that include a photo whenever activity is detected near the doorbell.

How Much Does the Ring Doorbell Wired Cost?

The Ring Doorbell Wired costs $59.99, allowing you to save about an additional $40 compared to the new 2020 Ring Video Doorbell. Most doorbells by the brand range between $100 and $400, depending on the model. But, we’re definitely happy to see a more affordable Ring doorbell option on the market.

Several Alternatives

If you’re in the market for a video doorbell, here are some alternatives to the Ring.

  • Eufy Security Video Doorbell 2K

    Our rating

    Our take

The Eufy is a close call when compared to the Lorex 2K Video Doorbell. You’ll still get person detection, but Eufy is focused on protecting your clips and data. It offers 256-bit encryption and local storage to keep your footage safe from cybercriminals. Other features include custom motion zones, pre-recorded messages and voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

    Stand-out features include

    • 2K resolution for video quality twice as sharp as 1080p HD
    • 256-bit encryption for secure video recording and storage
    • Pre-recorded instant responses to send guests from your smartphone using Eufy app
  • Arlo Essential Video Doorbell

    Our take

Get a better view with the Arlo Essential Video Doorbell, featuring a 1:1 aspect ratio and 180° field of view. This video doorbell also boasts HD and HDR video for clarity and has a built-in siren for deterrence. The Foresight feature with the Arlo Essential Video Doorbell allows you to see moments before the doorbell picks up activity so you can get a better understanding of events around your door.

    Stand-out features include

    • HD and HDR video
    • Ultra wide 180° field of view
    • Built-in siren
  • Best doorbell camera features

Lorex 2K QHD Wi-Fi Video Doorbell

    Our rating

    Our take

The big difference between the Lorex 2K Video Doorbell and the Arlo Video Doorbell is the video quality. Lorex’s doorbell camera takes it a step further with 2K video — that’s more than twice the 1080p average camera quality. Some cameras don’t show clear videos in poor lighting, but Lorex has HDR to fix the camera’s exposure for crisp video clips automatically. Here’s what else sets Lorex apart.

    • The convenience of sending a pre-recorded message if you cannot answer. Two-way audio is also available to speak to guests using the Lorex app.
    • Color night vision instead of the standard infrared LED night vision for better doorbell clips in darkness.
    • Built-in night light to automatically turn on or control using the Lorex app. We also like that it can shine during motion detection.

Lorex focuses on giving you sharp images and videos, day or night, with your doorbell camera so there’s no need for other outdoor surveillance. Best of all, Lorex has one of the cheapest doorbell cameras compared to our other top picks. However, you’ll need existing doorbell wiring for setup, and the camera uses local storage.

    Stand-out features include

    • Automatically records five seconds before the activity begins to give you as much footage as possible.
    • Use Amazon Alexa’s screen devices to answer the door with voice commands hands-free.
    • Person detection feature to know when someone’s at your door and reduce false alerts of passing cars or pets.

Is the Ring Video Doorbell Wired Worth It?

We’d say that for the price, features, and reviews we’ve seen, this doorbell camera is worth considering. You’re still getting access to two-way talk, night vision, alerts, and additional features with the Ring Protect subscriptions. The only downside is that you will need the Ring Chime or a compatible Alexa device for audible alerts. All-in-all, when it comes to front-door security, we’d say this is one product you don’t want to sleep on.
