Lorex Security

Lorex doesn’t specialize in traditional home security systems like most providers, but you will find HD cameras and recording technology to help you monitor your home.

What Sets Lorex Apart?

Founded in 1991, Lorex is a security company that offers innovative products like 2K and 4K camera systems to help families protect their homes. Lorex is not like traditional home security providers in the sense of offering equipment packages that include motion detectors, door/window sensors, smoke detectors, and smart home devices, but Lorex is great for you if you want to be able to monitor your home through video surveillance. Plus, with Lorex, you won’t have to be concerned with an installation fee and monthly monitoring fee.

Through either of Lorex’s mobile apps (Home, Cloud, or Cirrus), you can receive notifications and monitor your home remotely. All of your footage will be stored either on a digital video recorder (DVR) or network video recorder (NVR). You can choose whether or not you want a system that requires wired-power or wire-free, battery-power. Learn more about some of the systems that Lorex has to offer with our overview.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lorex Security

BestSmartLightBulbsFAQsManPhoto

Does Lorex have traditional home security systems?

No, Lorex does not have traditional home security systems in the sense of being able to purchase motion detectors, door/window sensors, smoke detectors, and smart home devices. Lorex provides camera systems that are designed for those whose main goal is video monitoring.

Are Lorex camera systems installed by professionals?

No, Lorex camera systems are designed for self-installation (DIY). Lorex claims that they their installation processes are easy to follow, and everything you need will be included with your kit. Typically, with each camera system you can expect to find 60 ft. of cable, screws and anchors, and a power adaptor and/or receiver. You may need a ladder, screwdrivers, and a power drill to help with installation.

Does Lorex have monitoring plans?

No, Lorex does not offer any monitoring plans. You’ll be responsible for monitoring your security system. Lorex makes this easy, however, through either of their mobile apps, allowing to get notifications, view live video feeds, and even set custom motion zones.

How is my camera footage stored?

Lorex provides 2 methods for storage: by digital video recorder (DVR) or network video recorder (NVR). A DVR is older technology and processes video through an encoder. Lorex DVR systems use a single BNC cable for power and video transmission. An NVR is newer and processes video at the camera. NVR systems are also powered by ethernet cable, commonly known as Power Over Ethernet (PoE).

What’s the difference between Lorex’s mobile apps?

Lorex has three mobile apps: Lorex Home, Lorex Cloud, and Lorex Cirrus. Your Lorex security system will determine the Lorex app that you can use. Each mobile app gives you access to alerts, remove viewing, and the ability to customize camera settings.
