Factors to Consider Before Buying a Baby Crib

  • Toxin-Free Materials

Popular baby cribs are designed to be stylish and contemporary, but not all designs are safe. Most finishing paint used on cribs includes the toxin polyurethane or and some materials, such as manufactured woods, may have volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that spread a toxic gas. Start by looking for cribs made with 100% solid wood and non-toxic finish.

  • Safety Standards and Certifications

To find the safest baby cribs, look for baby cribs that have been approved safe by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). JPMA’s products are tested to meet or exceed safety regulations set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Lastly, make sure your baby crib is Greenguard Gold Certified to know it’s tested for over 360 VOCs and more than 10,000 toxic chemicals.

  • Slat Distance

The space between each slat in the baby crib should be no more than 2 ⅜ inches (six centimeters). If the slats are further apart, there’s a higher risk of the baby’s legs and arms getting stuck in between them so be sure to measure the slat distance before assembling.

Top features to look for in the best baby crib

  • Converting Kids

Babies develop quickly and can grow out of their standard crib before two years old. To save money on toddler and twin-sized beds over the years, consider a crib with conversion options. Baby crib converting kits include a rail for the kid bed and other materials to convert the crib safely. They’re often sold separately from the baby crib but are a lot less expensive than buying different beds over the years.

  • Mattress Height Adjustments

As the baby reaches the climbing stage, it will become easy for your little one to get out of the crib on their own. The best baby cribs include 3-5 mattress height adjustment levels. Parents can put the mattress height at the highest level during infancy stages and lower the mattress height as the baby grows without needing to buy a new baby crib.

  • Extra Storage

Extra storage built into the baby crib is a good ‘nice to have.’ Some baby cribs include extra space to store your baby crib’s sheets, mattress pads or other nursery essentials. Many have a built-in storage drawer at the bottom of the crib. Others include a changing table with built-in shelves.

Baby Crib Safety Tips

To make sure your little one sleeps safely in whichever baby crib you choose, there are a few best practices to follow.

  • Remember to use a firm crib mattress. A firm, inner coil crib mattress is best for your baby until they reach the toddler stages. Softer, cushion-like sleep surfaces for infants may lead to suffocation due to the mattress forming to your baby’s body and face.
  • Use the ‘Two-Finger Test.’ Place two fingers in between the mattress and the crib. If you can fit more than two fingers in the space, it increases the risk of the legs, arms and head getting stuck in the unsafe space.
  • Don’t keep loose items in the crib. Keep the baby crib free of loose items including toys, pillows and blankets. Only use fitted sheets and blankets to avoid suffocation and choking hazards in the crib.
  • Place the baby on his or her back to sleep. Place the baby in the crib only on their back. Also, avoid sleep positioners that keep your baby in one position while sleeping to reduce the risk of suffocation. Any other position can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  • Use a pacifier. Giving your baby a pacifier when placing them in the crib to sleep has been proven to reduce the risk of SIDS. During sleep time, avoid attaching the pacifier to the baby’s clothing to reduce the risk of choking.

Parents have plenty of crib options to choose from. They range in price, design, color and convertibility. With many choices to choose from, remember the first priority is safety.
