Winner: SimpliSafe (Video Recap)

Cove and SimpliSafe are both contract-free home security providers that offer standalone equipment and whole-home systems, depending on your needs. Both offer DIY installation, professional monitoring and environmental monitoring equipment. But some key differences may help you make your decision.

Cove is best known for its DIY installation that’s easy enough for a kid to set up. The systems are customizable to fit your home’s size and safety needs. On the other hand, SimpliSafe is best known for its ‘smash-safe’ base station and affordable smart security equipment. SimpliSafe also offers standalone smart security equipment at an affordable price.

Compare Cove and Simplisafe

  • Equipment

    Winner: SimpliSafe

Cove is one of the newer home security providers that has fewer equipment options than SimpliSafe. The company is on the verge of broadening its product selection to include a video doorbell, outdoor camera and mobile app. But for now, only an indoor camera, sensors and environmental monitoring equipment are available.

Cove and SimpliSafe both have advanced base stations to control your equipment. Cove’s touchscreen is tamper-proof and connects to Cove’s monitoring centers. SimpliSafe is ‘smash-proof’ to alert emergency responders even if burglars try to break your system during a break-in.

But if you’re looking for tried and true smart security now, SimpliSafe may be your best bet. You can choose from security essentials, a smart lock, a video doorbell and the SimpliCam that doubles as an indoor and outdoor camera.

On the bright side, both providers offer standalone equipment, but you’ll have a better experience with a whole-home system whether you choose Cove or SimpliSafe.

  • Installation

    Winner: SimpliSafe

Both Cove and SimpliSafe’s home security systems are easy to self-install. Cove prides itself on its installation being so simple that a kid can set it up hassle-free. But if you’re looking for more installation flexibility, we recommend SimpliSafe.

SimpliSafe offers both professional and self-installation, depending on your preference. Professional installation costs $79. Technicians will install your system, test it and show you how to control it before leaving, so you feel comfortable with SimpliSafe’s equipment and services right away.

  • Home Automation

    Winner: Cove

Compared to other providers, like ADT and Vivint, you won’t get the best smart home automation services with Cove or SimpliSafe. Neither system lets you connect your favorite smart home devices. However, SimpliSafe has limited smart home controls using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands to arm and disarm your system. SimpliSafe also allows you to pair August smart locks.

Cove and SimpliSafe both have apps for mobile control of your home’s security. Cove lets you arm and disarm your system and will send you mobile alerts whenever your system is disarmed or the alarm sounds. You’ll need a separate app to monitor your indoor security camera and playback clips. SimpliSafe’s mobile app gives you the same arming and disarming features, but you’ll also get the perk of surveillance features and video storage in a single app.

  • Security Cameras

    Tie: Cove and SimpliSafe

Both Cove and SimpliSafe offer DIY and professional monitoring, so you can choose which you prefer. But Cove’s professional monitoring service comes with extra protection and peace of mind. You’ll get three-factor authentication using LiveAssist from your control panel’s two-way audio, InstaText for a text message from Cove, and a phone alerting you that your alarm was triggered.

SimpliSafe’s professional monitoring plans come with a built-in cellular connection and 24/7 fire dispatching services. If you upgrade SimpliSafe’s monitoring plan, you’ll get visual alarm verification for police to see live camera footage of the activity happening at your home before they even get there.

Both monitoring services are great options, so this round’s a tie. It all comes down to preference

  • Contracts

    Tie: Cove and SimpliSafe

Neither Cove nor SimpliSafe require long-term contracts for their equipment or services. Both providers offer professional monitoring and video cloud storage in one package starting at $14.99 per month. You can pay per month and cancel or upgrade service anytime. Home security free of long-term commitments means you have more flexibility, and you’ll own your equipment instead of leasing it.

Our pick: SimpliSafe

SimpliSafe is our top pick for home security. Choose from durable equipment that can be used as a standalone or for a whole-home security system. We love that SimpliSafe also has flexible installation and monitoring options based on your needs. SimpliSafe doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles of smart home automation like other providers, but it offers more control and ease of use than Cove. Both providers are great options for renters, but if you’re a homeowner, SimpliSafe offers a video doorbell, smart lock and camera to give you a whole-home security system at a fraction of the cost compared to other providers.
