Compare Blue by ADT and Alder and make the choice between these two home security providers.

If you’re looking for a flexible home security solution that will adjust to your situation and go where you go, Blue by ADT and Alder are both worth serious consideration. Both companies offer flexible month-to-month agreements and all the benefits of traditional home security such as customized equipment and 24/7 monitoring. Only one, Blue by ADT, is available nationwide, whereas Alder is only available in 18 states. If you’ve already decided your search is down to one of these providers, we’ll lay out the key differences between the two providers so you can finalize your choice.

Compare Blue by ADT vs. Alder

Alder and Blue by ADT have similar approaches to home security. Both offer month-to-month plans and customizable equipment options, as well as 24/7 monitoring, DIY installation and even the option to monitor your system yourself. Alder differs a bit from Blue by ADT by offering only custom solutions. There are no packages on its website, and no easy-to-find pricing, so you’ll have to book an in-home consultation to find out what your final cost will be. Blue by ADT, on the other hand, lets you pick your package or customize your own package right on its website, giving you a more anonymous way to outfit your home security, and avoid the possible upsells that come with an in-person consultation.

  • Price

    Winner: Blue by ADT

Blue by ADT offers a competitive rate for professional monitoring at $19.99 per month. That’s on par with some of the most affordable services around. Alder, on the other hand, customizes its pricing based on your system, and as far as we can find out, that cost starts at $45.99 per month. That’s a hands-down win for Blue by ADT.

  • Equipment

    Winner: Blue by ADT

While both Alder and Blue by ADT offer a variety of equipment options, Alder’s offerings are difficult to determine without an in-home consultation. Because Blue by ADT makes this easier and more transparent, and because you can design your own system right on its website, it wins this round.

  • Safety Monitoring

    Winner: Alder

Alder does offer safety and environmental monitoring options like carbon monoxide detectors, flood and freeze detectors, and medical monitoring devices. Blue by ADT only offers a fire safety sensor for home safety, making Alder a winner in this round.

  • Installation

Tie: Blue by ADT and Alder

Both Blue by ADT and Alder offer only DIY installation options at this time. Both offer easy, nonintrusive equipment and instructions, and in most cases, setting up your system with either of these providers is quick and straightforward.

  • Warranty

    Winner: Blue by ADT

Alder offers an optional limited lifetime warranty on equipment, handy in case of an accident. This service does cost an additional $3 per month, however. Blue by ADT, on the other hand, includes a 12-month warranty. Despite the longer warranty for Alder, we'll give this to Blue since its warranty comes at no extra cost.

  • Security Cameras

    Winner: Blue by ADT

Alder does offer a few security camera options, including doorbell and outdoor cameras, but Blue by ADT has a much wider variety of camera options and emphasizes camera packages specifically. Blue by ADT has an indoor, outdoor and video doorbell camera. So Blue by ADT is the better choice if you’re looking for security cameras.

Winner: Blue by ADT

Although on the surface, Blue by ADT and Alder are similar types of providers — they both emphasize custom systems and flexibility and require no long-term commitments — Blue will probably be the better choice for most people. Its pricing is lower and easier to predict, its equipment options are flexible and simple to understand, and its website provides most of the information you’ll need. It also has a better BBB rating and, in general, is much more transparent about its services.

Alder might be a better choice for you if you’re looking for environmental detectors or medical monitoring, or if you prefer the more personal touch of having someone come to your home to help you design your system. However, Alder is only available in 18 states, so Blue by ADT wins by default for most people.
