Best Juicers – Comparisons & Reviews of Top Rated Juicers

by Caitlin McCormack | Last Updated Feb. 23rd, 2016

Juicing has become a popular source of nutrition for Americans over the last few years, after several health gurus including Doctor Oz started touting its many health benefits. It’s also an easy way to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet – something that the majority of Americans are lacking in. Fresh juice is full of vitamins and is easily portable.

While you might not consider a juicer to be a particularly dangerous item, it is still important to keep in mind that they can and do cause injury – especially when used improperly.

Possible injuries that can be caused by a juicer include cuts, pinches, electrical injuries including electrocution and fires, and even the severing of fingers.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) estimates that there were only 4 reported cases of injuries to children under the age of 18 caused by juicers that were treated in hospital in the United Stated in 2013. Statistically-speaking, juicers are much safer than other kitchen appliances such as ovens and refrigerators.

The number of actual injuries caused by juicers might be quite higher than this, as the data from the CPSC only looked at those injuries which resulted in medical treatment at a hospital, and minor injuries were likely treated at home or another medical treatment facility not included in the reporting data.

Besides physical injuries caused by falls, pinches and more, it is worth noting that food-borne illnesses can also be directly attributed to improper food handling practices. In fact, the CDC estimates that about 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases each and every year, which makes ensuring proper food handling measures essential. Young children, pregnant women and the elderly are all at increased risk of contracting a foodborne illness.

When purchasing

  • For the most part, safety standards for juicers have been created by a mix of consumer groups, government agencies, producers, retailers, and suppliers and are completely voluntary on the part of manufacturers. Look for a sticker on your juicer that tells you it’s been approved by CSA, ASTM, ANSI, UL, CPSC or some other such safety association. Be cautious of purchasing a juicer made in China, as regulatory standards are much different there than in the United States.
  • If your juicer came with a warranty or registration card, be sure to complete the form and mail it in to the manufacturer. This way, you’ll be notified of any recalls or other safety information in the event of a problem with your model. Surveys done by Consumer Reports National Research Center show that most people seldom or never take this essential safety step.

When operating

  • Always always always use the food pusher to push fruits and vegetables through the chute of your juicer. Sticking your fingers in the chute runs the risk of cuts or other serious injuries.
  • Ensure all components are installed and in place before powering on the unit. Ensure it’s on a flat, dry surface.
  • Do not try to force hard fruits of vegetables through the juicer, slow and steady is ideal. Also ensure that fruits and vegetables are cut to an appropriate size before putting into the chute.
  • Keep the juicer out of reach of children, and do not operate near hot or wet surfaces.

When cleaning

  • Unplug your juicer before cleaning in order to prevent any nasty surprises.
  • Take extra care when cleaning the blades of your juicer. They will be especially sharp and can easily cut you.
  • Clean up any spills immediately to prevent the growth of bacteria and risk of foodborne illness.
  • Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and cleaning of your juicer, and don’t hesitate to contact them if you should have a question about something specific that isn’t covered in your user manual.

In case of accident

  • In case of a cut, pinch or other mild injury, immediately remove yourself from the area and seek first aid treatment when necessary.
  • If a more serious accident should occur, do not hesitate to contact 9-1-1.
