A home that is left empty while a family goes away on vacation is a tempting target for criminals and burglars. As a homeowner, you can take basic preventative measures to keep your home safe while you are away.
When a person decides to go on vacation they should make it a point to not announce it to the whole world. In this day and age most people communicate online through sites such as Facebook and Twitter. By announcing you will be gone it may let a complete stranger know they can have complete access to your home while your away.
You can ask a friend or neighbor to check in on the home daily if possible to make sure that everything is okay. They can help by picking up newspapers and mail that may alert a stranger that you are away. You can give them your contact information and where you will be staying in case they notice something out of the ordinary or suspicious.
Make sure that when you leave you lock all the windows and doors. If its not easy for a burglar sometimes they may not even try. Make sure that all the curtains are closed in the home so no one can peek in and see what valuables you may have in your home.
Purchasing a light switch timer is a good investment because a you can set it to turn on and off for a few hours in the evening signaling that you may be home.
Although you can take preventive measures for your home it is still a good idea to purchase a home security system. If a burglar knows the home has a security system due to signs and decals of the security company outside, it make may them decide to pass over a home and can make it less attractive to them. They know they will not even be able to get near enough to your home to steal or vandalize because the motion detectors will set off the alarm system which will then alert the police. Some security companies also have video cameras that a you can place in your home while on vacation can check in and view it from your laptop. A security system not only keeps away burglars but also can alert the fire department if there is a fire or a carbon monixide leak. A security system can give a you as a homeowner peace of mind that your home is being protected.
