5 Family Friendly Movie Series to Marathon
by SSF | Last Updated Oct. 3rd, 2013
A movie marathon is a great way to spend a lot of quality time with friends and family. They’re easy to plan and put together and they’re relatively stress free. The only difficult part is deciding which movies to marathon. You could do marathons based around certain actors or directors or watch whole trilogies.
However you decide to make your marathon your own, you can’t go wrong with these awesome movie series.

What’s great about this series for a marathon is that while it’s visually stimulating enough to keep you engaged, the movies have such a different feel so you don’t have to worry about it becoming too repetitive or boring. This is also a great series for the book readers to watch with friends who have not read the books. You’ll be able to fill in the gaps with useful trivia and character back story.
Harry Potter is a serious undertaking for first time movie marathoners. With about 20 hours total run time, this marathon might have to become a two-day affair.
Don’t roll your eyes. You probably hear the words Star Wars and visions of sweaty nerds in home-made costumes start floating into your head. But these movies have stood the test of time and have a lot to offer.
Just look at the basics. The story line is interesting and easy to follow, the characters have depth and personality, the special effects are still awesome, and the soundtrack is genius. Just make sure you stick to the Original Trilogy. The Prequel Trilogy is seriously lacking in quality dialogue and character development, and although the effects are better, it’s still laughably bad.
With a run time of more than 6 hours, the original Trilogy will be plenty to keep you busy. This is a great marathon for kids and adults, so keep it in mind for the next rainy weekend or snow day. If watching the Trilogy turns you into a super-fan, click here to gain access to lot of other cool Star Wars movies.
Jurassic Park is so good they rereleased it in 3-D 20 years after it originally came out. If any movie deserves a marathon, it’s this one. The effects from 20 years ago still look amazingly realistic, the characters are compelling and interesting and, c’mon, dinosaurs.
To be fair, The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 are not as good as the first one. The stories feel a bit rushed and slapped together, but you still get awesome visuals and a killer soundtrack (no pun intended). This trilogy is great for a quick marathon, with a run time less than 6 hours.
When Toy Story came out in 1995 (yes, it was that long ago), it was an instant classic. It was the first fully computer-generated feature film and it rocked our worlds. Although these movies are a bit more whimsical and fun than the others on the list, any self-respecting group of grown-ups would still be thrilled to watch them with you on a Saturday night. The jokes are still as funny, the songs are still as catchy, and sure, you might shed a tear or two.
What a great escape this would be after a grueling week in the office. With a total run time of just 4 and a half hours, this is a totally doable weeknight marathon.
No matter what you’re in the mood for, there’s a movie marathon for you. You just need a few friends, a big comfortable couch, and your weekend is set. Which movies do you think would make a great marathon?
