When used with a bit of caution and common sense under proper adult supervision, bicycles can be an excellent way for children to get some exercise, develop gross motor control, and burn off all that energy.

But bikes are not without their risks. Always be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and ensure your child is wearing an approved helmet when riding their bike, even if it’s just a short distance. Your child should also wear visible clothing, use lights at night, and follow the rules of the road when riding with traffic.

With the above tips in mind, we’ve identified the best bikes for kids we consider to be the safest, based on available features and average customer reviews and ratings. Check out our picks to help you get your kids up and riding safely.

Kids Bike Safety

Before you get your child ready to ride their first bike, there are a few safety guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Kids should always wear a properly fitted helmet per the National Highway Safety Administration (NHSA) guidelines.
  • Make sure the bike fits your child. When standing, there should be 1 to 2 inches between your child and the top bar.
  • The seat post should be adjusted to the child’s height. The handlebar height should be level with the seat post.
  • Your tires should always be inflated to the right pressure and brakes.
  • Teach your kids to always be mindful of their surroundings, especially at night. If your child’s bike doesn’t have a light reflector, be sure to add one.
