Evacuating Your Home During a Terrorist Attack
A terrorist attack can happen suddenly and without warning. Depending on the situation, local authorities may ask you to evacuate your home for your safety. How would you handle this situation? The best way to cope with disaster is to be prepared and to work with your family as a team. Follow these steps to create a family evacuation plan that includes where to go, how to get there, and what to bring with you.
First -- Determine Where to Go
If the order to evacuate is given, you should do so immediately and carefully follow the directions given by local authorities. If a local shelter has been established, go there. If this is not an option, a "safe house" is a reliable alternative. Here are some guidelines for choosing a good safe house:
- Choose a friend or relative who lives far enough away that the disaster is not likely to affect their home (between 100-150 miles).
- If you're in the inner city, they should be in a rural area or smaller town
- Whatever disaster you're facing should not affect them, and vice versa
- You should be able to get there on one tank of gas, even if there's heavy traffic
Second -- Determine How To Get There
Wherever you've decided to go, the best way to get there is by car. It's convenient, offers some protection, is relatively fast, and allows you to carry more with you than on if you were on foot or bicycle.
Don't let your car's gas tank get below half full. If disaster strikes, you'll be glad you have enough to get away fast. It's also not a bad idea to keep a couple of five gallon tanks of gas handy so you can top off your car's tank in case you need to evacuate. Keep your car in good mechanical condition.
Third -- Plan your Route
Use travel routes specified by local authorities. Don't use shortcuts because certain areas may be impassable or dangerous. Keep road maps handy.
What to Bring with You
Be prepared for any emergency by assembling an emergency supplies kit. Keep it in a handy place in an easy-to-grab bag. Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes.
Taking Care of Your House
If you're sure you have time and are instructed to do so, shut off water, gas, and electricity before leaving. Lock your house.
Remember, in a crisis such as a terrorist attack, everyone is in need of the same services as you. The more self-sufficient you can be, the better.
